6 Different Types Of Material Handling Equipment In India

Did you know that in the 2021 financial year, the market size of material handling equipment was 7.7 thousand units? Experts have projected these numbers to reach 16.8 units by 2030. In 2021 alone, India sold over 91.8 thousand units of construction equipment. These numbers show how important these pieces of equipment are to the material handling industry.

Material handling equipment comes in four groups; storage and handling, bulk material handling, engineering systems and industrial trucks. Either way, major material handling equipment is mostly used in India, including the following:

Reach Trucks

Reach trucks help store and retrieve materials in narrow aisles, tight spaces, and high-density storage areas. These trucks have a mast that can extend and reach high heights allowing access to materials stored on high shelves and racks. Electric reach trucks are ideal for companies with limited floor space as they allow for more storage capacity in the same space.

In India, reach trucks are commonly used in warehouses, distribution centres, and retail stores to store goods such as boxes, containers, and pallets. They are also common in manufacturing plants and other industrial facilities for handling heavy materials and equipment.

These are small industrial vehicles with a fork-like feature that can be raised or lowered depending on the load level to lift. Forklifts come in two main categories; electric and diesel forklifts. Forklifts play a crucial role in the material handling industry in India. They help lift, move, and transport heavy materials and equipment in various industries, including manufacturing, construction, and warehousing.

Furthermore, forklift trucks help with several tasks, such as:

  • Loading and unloading goods from trucks
  • Stacking and unstacking materials in warehouses
  • Transporting heavy material in manufacturing plants

They also help move materials in construction sites, where they help efficiently and safely handle heavy building materials, making it crucial that these machines are always steady and up to date with maintenance.

These are the most commonly used material handling equipment in India. They help transport materials from one place to another, and they come in various types:

  • Belt conveyors
  • Roller conveyors
  • Chain conveyors

When using these, it is crucial to note that they can only move in the same path each time. If you are moving goods from Point A to Point B specifically, the conveyors are the ideal choice.

Pallet Jacks

Pallet jacks are essential for moving heavy pallets of goods within a warehouse or factory. They are usually manually operated or powered by a hydraulic pump, making it easier to move heavy loads. A pallet jack works by having a platform, called a pallet, to place goods. The platform is supported by two front wheels and two in the back. A hydraulic pump raises and lowers the platform, allowing the operator to move the pallet of goods easily.

One of the main benefits of a pallet jack is that it is a cost-effective solution for moving goods and is simple and easy to use, making them an ideal solution for businesses that need to handle pallets of goods without incurring the high cost of purchasing and maintaining a forklift.

Cranes lift and help move heavy loads, such as machinery, building materials, and containers. They come in various types, such as:

  • Overhead cranes
  • Gantry cranes
  • Jib cranes

They are the perfect substitute when the loads are too heavy for the conveyors to move. They can lift goods vertically and horizontally with a much higher load capacity. One major limitation cranes have is that you can only use them in limited areas.

Order Pickers

Forklift trucks are ideal for moving goods within a warehouse. Keeping them safe from other equipment or machinery within the warehouse is always crucial. Alternatively, you can always use order pickers. These machines make it easy to pick up individual goods or orders within a warehouse and transfer them to pallets or trolleys for distribution.

Material handling equipment has become essential in several industries worldwide. They also help move and store goods in various industries in India. Various material handling equipment are available in the market today.

Each offers unique features and benefits, making it easy for businesses to choose the right equipment based on their specific requirements. Effective material handling not only increases productivity but also helps reduce the risk of workplace injuries and improves overall safety.
