How To Extend Your Stay In Canada Once Post Graduation Work Permit Program (Pgwp) Expires?

The Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) program in Canada allows international students who have graduated from learning institution to gain work experience in Canada for up to three years. The PGWP is issued for the same time as the student’s program of study, up to a maximum of three years. The PGWP holder can work for any employer in Canada, in any field of work.

Listed below are a few ways to extend your stay in Canada once PGWP expires:

You can apply for a new work permit under a different program such as the International Mobility Program (IMP)

Once the post graduate work permit for Canada expires, an individual can apply for a new work permit under a different program such as the International Mobility Program (IMP) if they meet the eligibility criteria. The IMP allows employers to hire foreign workers without a labor market impact assessment. The worker must meet certain criteria such as having a job offer in a high-skilled occupation, working in a reciprocal work exchange agreement, or being part of a significant benefit to Canada.

You can apply for permanent residence status through Express Entry Program

Once PGWP for Canada expires, individuals can apply for permanent residence status through the Express Entry Program. Express Entry is a federal program that manages applications for permanent residence in Canada through the Federal Skilled Worker Program, Federal Skilled Trades Program, and Canadian Experience Class. To be eligible for Express Entry, individuals must meet certain criteria such as having a certain level of work experience, language proficiency, and education. If selected through the Express Entry program, individuals will be able to apply for a permanent residence in Canada.

You can also use the option of a Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) to extend your stay

Once the PGWP has expired, one option for extending your stay in Canada is to apply for a Provincial Nominee Program (PNP). PNPs are designed to help provinces and territories attract and retain skilled workers to fill labor shortages in specific industries. Each province and territory has its own criteria and application process for PNP.

One can apply for an extension of your work permit if you have an offer from a Canadian employer

Once the PGWP program for Canada expires, individuals can apply for a work permit extension if they have a job offer from a Canadian employer. This is known as an open work permit and it allows the holder to work for any employer in Canada. It is important to note that the process of obtaining an open work permit can take several months to complete, and it is recommended that one applies well before the PGWP expires.

One can apply for a study permit to continue your education in Canada and extend your stay

Once the PGWP program for Canada expires, individuals can apply for a study permit to continue their education in Canada and extend their stay. This is a good option for those who wish to pursue further education in Canada after completing their undergraduate or graduate degree through a Canada education visa. However, it is important to note that having a study permit does not automatically guarantee that a work permit will be issued.

You can apply for a work permit under the Global Skills Strategy program

Individuals also have the option to apply for a work permit under the Global Skills Strategy program. This program is designed to help Canadian employers attract highly skilled foreign talent in specific fields, such as technology, finance, and engineering. To be eligible for this program, the individual must have a job offer from a Canadian employer in a field that is considered to be of high demand and have the necessary qualifications and experience to do the job.

You can apply for a business or entrepreneur visa to extend your stay in the country

Individuals can apply for a business or entrepreneur visa to extend their stay in the country. These types of visas are intended for individuals who wish to start or invest in a business in Canada. It is worth noting that the specific requirements and application process for these types of visas can vary and it is always best to check with the Canadian immigration department for updated information on the subject.

You can apply for a visitor visa if you need to leave Canada and return

Individuals can apply for a visitor visa if they need to leave Canada and return to the country for an extended stay. The visitor visa would allow them to re-enter Canada temporarily, but they would need to apply for another work permit if they want to continue working.
